Here's some overhead views from the kitecam of Bruce Oldenberg.these are taken from a digital camera suspended from a kite and operated by Bruce from the ground....
This is the International Papers Thilmany plant. This is a difficult plant to get views for. Its location makes it difficult to get good views of it from public property. I start out from the public roads into the plant next to the Fox River circa 1998 then go to the back side of the plant taken in May 2007. These photos go from east to west titled backside views. At least with these views you can construct flats along your layout to show the various spots for boxcars/pulpwood/chemicals/ fuel oil/ soda ash/ plastic pellets for coated paper. If you have taken bettter views of this plant we'd love to see them!/Bob
This tour takes you down the Kimberly Sub. It starts at the east end of Appleton yard and then drops down a 1% grade down to the Fox River Valley and follows it for about 8 miles to its end in South Kaukauna. Check the archived messages for more information on this sub as we have spent a lot of time documenting what happens here. Please note that when you get to Appleton Coated ie the "Locks Mill" that there are views from the 80's and nineties mixed in with present day views (photos 111-114)so you can see how the plant developed along the way so please check your dates on the photos There are a number of paper mills and paper warehouses along this sub making this sub a very busy and profitable one for the WC. Thanks to Ben Greuel and Brian Pawlowski for the photos and drawings!/Bob Menzies WC2scale moderator
slice the photos 1 thru 4 from left to right and you get a full view of the foundry. This facility is a half mile east (south)of Neenah yard proper/Bob
This is part two from Neenah wye area. The CNW line was severed around 1996 through Neenah the line runs through town to Menasha where it hooks up with the Manitowoc line further past Doty Island. These photos bring you up to the canal district industries at Doty Island timetable east.
This tour takes you from Neenah WYE to Stroebe Road Siding. This portion of the Neenah Sub was dubbed the "miracle mile" because at one time it was plagued with several slow orders and it took forever to get through this area until the repairs were finally made to this area. This site is currently under construction as we add photos to it. The signals here have been replaced in the fall of 2005/ and the track arrangement changed. If you happen to be at Winchester Road in Neenah please get so,me photos of the new track arrangement which can be had right from the road and send them in. Thanks Bob Menzies
Neenah yard is an ex-SOO yard. When the WC absorbed the exFRVR-exCNW line through Neenah the lines were combined. The result is that this yard went from classifying 150 cars a day in Lake States days to over 350 cars a day. This total increased again as yard tracks were added when the roundhouse was removed in 1996. There are numerous locals that call Neenah yard home servicing the many paper mills in the area. Add to this the numerous road trains that pick up and set out here and you have a very busy place. Old Soo track alignments were found lacking and the north yard leads were realigned in WC days and eventually the entire yard was rebuilt with electrical switches. The roundhouse was removed and a piggyback ramp and trailer storage added in the 1996. The yard went from 8 to 16 tracks.
The tour starts in Plover/Whiting area and works its way south and west to Wisconsin Rapids. Industry locator maps have been added recently that have been color enhanced for easier viewing. As more information on this sub presents itself we will add it to this collection. By downloading the maps and photos you can prepare a booklet that would allow you to model this subdivision. Thanks again to Ben Greuel for the drawings and footwork to piece this together for us./Enjoy! Bob Menzies WC2scale moderator
Bruce has been out with his kite again. These photos come from a camera that is actually in his kite! The resulting views are stunning!/ Thanks Bruce for sharing with us again/Bob
